General Courses

General Course is a subject that must be followed by all students from all study programs. The General Course consists of five courses as follows: (1) Civic Education (2-3 credits), (2) Basic Socio-Cultural Sciences (2-3 credits), (3) Basic Natural Sciences (2-3 credits), (4) Indonesian (2-3 credits), and (5) English (4 credits). In addition to these five courses, there are two other courses, namely Islamic Studies and Kemuhammadiyahan, which must also be taken by all students from all study programs and are peculiarities of Muhammadiyah universities. However, at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta, the management of both courses is carried out by the Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan Development Institute, under the coordination of Vice Rector IV.

  1. Civic Education

Civic Education is a compulsory subject that must be followed and must be passed by all students from all study programs. This course weighs 2-3 credits and can be given in odd or even semesters according to the distribution of courses in each study program.

  1. Indonesian Language

Indonesian is a compulsory subject and must be passed by all students from all study programs. This course weighs 2-3 credits and emphasizes scientific writing skills. This course can be given in odd or even semesters according to the distribution of courses in each study program.

  1. EAP English (English for Academic Purpose)

EAP English is a compulsory subject and must be passed by all students from all study programs. This course weighs 4 credits and is divided into two courses, namely: English I (2 credits) and English II (2 credits). This course is intended to help students understand the learning material in their respective study programs (English for Academic Purpose). English I emphasizes Vocabuary, Structure, and Reading Comprehension; while English II emphasizes Listening Comprehension and, to some extent, Writing.
